Product Description
Akari Light Sculptures by Isamu Noguchi are considered icons of 1950s modern design.
They were designed by Noguchi from 1951 and handmade for a half century by the original manufacturer in Gifu, Japan.
The Akari paper lanterns are a harmonious blend of Japanese handcraft and modernist form. They fit easily and comfortably in a large variety of decors from sleek contemporary, 60's modern, to ctaftsman style and more traditional dwellings.
Personally I have had my Akari lamps for close to 20 years and they have aged gracefully due to the quality of the paper.
The Akari lamps are created from handmade washi paper and bamboo ribbing, supported by a metal frame.
With so many cheap copies out there it is still not hard to spot an original Noguchi Akari Lamp: A genuine Akari model will have a stamped red sun and half moon with Japan written under the symbol on the shade. Next to the symbol will be the signature I. Noguchi.
No imitation is capable of reproducing the combination of design, quiet grace and high quality materials that together make this not just another Japanese paper lantern, but a piece of art.
The Akari table lamp accommodates up to a 40 watt bulb (not included).
