Hubbardton Forge 13-7660, Brindille Pendant

Hubbardton Forge 13-7660, Brindille Pendant

Aptly named for the French word for “Twigs”,  this this beautiful new pendant from Hubbardton Forge has a casual, yet elegant bundle of hand forged twigs creating the focal point.

The Brindille pendant is another new stunning introduction from Hubbardton Forge that shows off the design and craftsman skills this great company is known for.
The branch design is both organic and contemporary.
It therefore  fits comfortably into a wide range of surroundings.
I can picture it over the dining table in my New Mexican adobe home, in a mountain cabin or in a sophisticated modern loft.
Mix and match your choice of glass, finish and shade options to create a customized design to suit your personal decorating style.

Hubbardton Forge Kirigami Pendant 13-3300

Hubbardton Forge Kirigami Pendant 13-3300

When I saw the Kirigami fixtures by Hubbardton Forge  at Market in Dallas in January their elegant, floating forms took my breath away.

Growing up in Denmark, seagulls were among the most common birds we had around. The Kirigami fixtures by Hubbardton Forge remind me of  these masters of flight with their striking profile.

Kirigami s a variation of origami   that includes cutting of the paper into symmetrical shapes while the paper is folded. Then the paper is opened and flattened showing the final form. (just like the paper snowflakes we made in kindergarten.)
Hubbardton Forge obviously went further than that and to top off the elegance of the shapes of their unique diffusers they chose beautiful materials.

The diffusers are striking in their simplicity. All the different variations, from the rich, warm Cherry veneer to the elegant Spun Frost manage to create a quality of light that enhances, not overpowers the hand-forged metal underneath.
This Kirigami fixture is  available in three sizes, from the 36.5″ that might be a perfect fit for a large dining table to a soaring 66″ “Wing Span” fit for a grand room.

At Form + Function we have shown Hubbardton Forge fixtures since the mid 80s and we have always appreciated the ways they push the boundaries of the craft of hand forging, never allowing their product line to grow stale, but constantly exploring new design possibilities

Ingo Maurer 24 Karat Blau

Ingo Maurer 24 Karat Blau

The 24 karat series is constructed of metal, plastic and gold leaf sealed in plastic .

The genuine gold leaf is beaten to a thickness of 1/10.000 mm (corresponding to 1.000 atomic layers), allowing short-wave blue light to pass through. Yellow-gold light is reflected, giving the inner surface of the lamp a gold appearance when lit while the outer surface is blue.
The shades on this unique pendant light can be arranged in various shapes and angles for a look unique to its owner.

Recently we have gotten a lot of phone calls from people who have bought a specific LED light at a big box store and are having a lot of issues with it.
That product happens to have a name that is close to the name of our business.

All these calls plus lots and lots of calls from our customers have prompted me to write this post about the quality of the newer energy efficient lighting solutions.

Why are so many people unhappy with their compact fluorescent lamps and LEDs. Why do we hear complaint after complaint about colors being horrible?

Well, it’s unfortunately the old “You get what you pay for.”

Big-Box stores have tried to get customers to buy these new products that everyone is writing so much about (talk about advertising!) by providing them at roughly the same price as regular incandescent lamps (the term the lighting industry uses for bulbs.)
They have therefore flooded the market with cheap low quality CFLs and  LED lights.

In our showroom we constantly test various CFL lamps and LED PARs and MR-16s to be able to show our customers that you can indeed find high quality energy efficient lamps.  We have found several we can highly recommend and I hope to bring back even more when I return from Dallas Market next weekend.

Reading up on this issue this morning I stumbled across this excellent article in Fine Homebuilding, written by lighting guru Randall Whitehead.  I just love that man!
Low Energy Lighting, High Energy Design.

Enjoy!
