UNICEF Ingo Maurer Snowflake
Broadway Kids Care (BKC), the organization of theater kids for kids (and others), will perform festive holiday songs at the 2010 UNICEF Snowflake lighting ceremony on (Thursday, November 18) at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in New York City. This year’s event will also feature an appearance by HGTV’s Vern Yip, who will flip the switch to illuminate the magnificent UNICEF Snowflake, signifying the beginning of the gift-giving season across the globe.
The UNICEF Snowflake, donated by the Stonbely family, has become an iconic fixture in New York City during the holiday season. It was handcrafted by German lighting designer Ingo Maurer and is adorned with 16,000 Baccarat crystal prisms. At 23 feet in diameter, over 28 feet in height and weighing 3,300 pounds, the UNICEF Snowflake is the largest outdoor chandelier of its kind. The UNICEF Snowflake will be illuminated for the entire holiday season.
This incredible, glittering new decoration was installed above Fifth Avenue in New York in November 2004. This superb structure is made of stainless steel with 300 flashing high-power LEDmodules and more than ten thousand sparkling crystals.
Lighting designer Ingo Maurer was invited by the United States Fund to design the new UNICEF snowflake. The result is a fantastic sculpture in light, suspended 80 feet in the air.

Ingo Maurer Knueller
The Ingo Maurer floor lamp Knueller is a true hit.
The name of this unique floor lamp is, as is the case with so many names for Ingo Maurer fixtures, a play on words. A Knueller in German means a hit and at the same time the verb “knuellen” means crumbling something up.
The shade is a spherical cage that holds randomly crumbled tissue to diffuse the light. (No worries: It is designed so that there is no fire hazard!)
The Knueller floor lamp continues the interactive lighting concepts so often presented by Ingo Maurer by enabling the user to crumble tissue paper randomly and develop the look of their diffuser.

The Tech Lighting Firefrost Pendant in crisp white create a perfect balance to the contemporary materials used in this kitchen. Notice the wall monorail in the background. An interesting solution to adding light exactly where you need it.
When I chose the low voltage pendants for my kitchen I took several samples home. I was certain that I wanted a bright color, preferably blue, to match the colorful accents from the Mexican tile in my kitchen. I actually ended up choosing white, which I’d never have guessed before I tried them all out. We neede the light in our dark kitchen and I was amazed to see, just how much more light the white Firefrost put out.

Ingo Maurer Alizz Cooper
The Alizz Cooper family of lights by Ingo Maurer are made from a common, German garden hose.
“In addition to its function of providing light, the flexibility of this lamp, which is available as a ceiling, floor or table lamp, is also aesthetically pleasing: The bends and knots create a certain degree of visual energy in combination with the lamp’s clear contours. And, what fits in very well with this concept, adds Maurer, “is the hose’s design – black with the yellow wavy line”.
It was not merely by chance that Ingo Maurer thought of the GOLD SNAKE® when searching for a suitable material for his Alizz Cooper lamp: “I wasn’t familiar with the name, but I knew the hose very well. I grew up on Reichenau Island in Lake Constance where hoses are used everywhere to water the fields of vegetables. As a child I often held the GOLD SNAKE® in my hand because we kids had to help a lot in those days”, recalls the designer who was born in 1932.”

I got a kick out of the Continental advertisement for the “Goldschlange” water hose.

Illume LED Solar Lantern
Since the mid-summer we have had a solar LED silk lantern hanging from a branch in our front yard. It amazes me again and again to see this translucent, glowing form suspended in air. Because it lacks cords and is only hanging from a thin wire loop it seems to float.
Ours is square. This 14″ globe will be available December 1st.
